Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas” as it is sometimes called, is a colorless, odorless gas that can be breathed in safely for a pain-killing effect. It induces a feeling of euphoria and makes the pain simply go away within a few minutes.
Some people will experience minor light-headedness and laughter (for which it gets its nickname) as side effects, but it is otherwise completely safe. Today, dentists mix between 30-70% oxygen in with nitrous oxide to make the process even safer.
Nitrous oxide is administered through a breathing mask that allows the gas to flow to your nose. An exit tube allows exhaled gas to flow away from the nostrils and into a vacuum machine.
The best part about nitrous oxide is its lack of “hangover” effect. When the gas supply is stopped, it will be eliminated from the body within three to five minutes. Patients can even drive themselves home after the procedure.
Sedation dentistry is another option for patients who have a phobia of dental work or are worried about experiencing pain. Patients simply need to take a prescribed medication the night before and the morning of the procedure. The medication is safe and has virtually no side effects. Patients will experience drowsiness and will need to be driven to their appointment. During the procedure, patients will sleep soundly while the dentist works on their teeth. When the patient wakes up, they will have no memory of the dental procedure and will have experienced no pain. Drowsiness does carry over after the patient wakes up, so they will need to be driven home again.
